Leopold Chirrut and Jenko met at the Grastone Inn where Chirrut is delivering some parcels for the Artificer. As they discuss the current woes of the Town, Chirrut mentions that he heard the Black Tower lost a patrol, and says, “we can’t really afford to loose anyone right now.” So they decide to head to find them.
So they leave imeediately for the Black tower to begin their quest. On the way they spot some Wolf tracks but are unmolested. Austin meets them at the tower and Welcomes them in. On hearing of their quest he is very helpful in showing the group the different standard routes taken by the patrols. “The Lost patrol disappeared between the Hunters cabin and the Artificer’s tower,” he says, “we’ve checking in with both, and they met Big Tom but not the Artificer.”
So the group plans to spend the night and set out in the morning. Leopold succefully hunts a wild boar and brings it in. Chirrut made stew, bacon and a week’s worth of Jerky to help supply their trip.
On the first night from the Tower they spot a bear which Leopold proposes hunting but Chirrut disagrees. They dual to decide the answer, several good punches were landed but dispite being in a head lock Chirrut wins and says “the voice of reason prevails!” (Jenko thinks men are stupid) Chirrut has the second watch and is experimenting with the Artificers night vision goggles when he is surprised by bandits and held at knife point! They demand all his money (he had only 9gp in change) so he just gave it to them. They start to rifle the other bags but Leopold wakes up and scares them off. Chirrut is quite ashamed and they don’t wake Jenko up.
At the Hunters Cabin there are many wagons of Sun Elf Gypsies who Leopold knows and he and Jenko go off with them when they arrive. Chirrut goes into the cabin, having mistaken them at first for dark elves his not quite as well receipted. Jenko and Leo speak with Soshi the leader of the Gypsies and Jenko convinces her to try and find the Lost Patrol with her Crystal Ball. Soshi is very confused and worred by what she see’s as she cannot tell if they are alive or dead, and says she see’s a lot stone. Leo leaves to party with gypsies but Janko says to talk. Later in the conversation Soshi warns Jenko of grave danger and darkness in her future but gives her an orb for luck.
When the travelers meet for dinner and discuss their plans they harken back to the maps in the tower and decide to visit the Burial Grounds, the Chimneys and then if no clue of the Lost Patrol is found head for the Stone Garden. They are forced to postpone their travels a Day due to a snow storm but make it to the Burial Grounds by lunch the third day after reaching the Cabin. There is no sign there of anything so they head for the Chimneys.
They made camp in an abandoned house by the Black Forest’s edge. They find the inhabitants dead in the basement with a dead Giant Spider and deduce from a diary, they one human died in combat with the spider just after stabbing it, and the other starved with a broken leg, unable to climb the ladder. Each of the travelers finds a book from the small library and plans to read it after the trip because it promises some fascinating knowledge.
The chimneys are an eerie place, it was the sit of a town that burned and each house’s chimney is still standing, the ash and bones are still strewn about. There are several notes written on a couple of chimneys, clearly by the patrols of the Black Tower. Jenko found one very interesting one, “spotted 2 children to the South East, pursuing” not knowing the date and seeing the chimney is not a geological stone place but a man made brick and mortar place they head on toward the Stone Garden by way of the forest edge.
At the isthmus of trees between the Black Forest and the one north of it, Leopold is ignored by a tree ent until he hits it with a snow ball, it knocks him over with a giant ball of snow but wont speak to him. Leo thinks it because he doesn’t know any elfish.
The adventures continue south east until the forest bends straight east. They cut south into the forest and come to an old ruin. Passing straight on, they come to some very good stone statues just strewn around the forest. Finally they reach the stone Garden, a large broken down Palace about the same vintage as the ruin to the north. The courtyard is full of stone statues of many different eras, some have peasant clothes and others have merchant garb. They see a set of foot prints in the snow coming out of the front door meandering about and heading back in so they know someone is alive here.
Leopold heads the group into the front door and clicks his fingers to light all the candles and torches. It is a magnificent foyer with double stairs and candelabra. Leopold sees a whisp of clothing disappear at the top of the stairs and calls out, but no answer. Chirrut sees foot prints in the frost on the floor and leads the group deeper into the house. After many passageways and turnings they loose the prints in a large spacious kitchen, just warm enough to keep the frost away. So they decide to light a fire and settle down, thinking that if the creature meant them harm it would have befallen them by now. Jenko finds a music box which plays a very sad tune when turned. And Leopold found a book that the moment he opened it he started to cry, this happened to Chirrut as well when he looked into it. Jenko realizes that the creature is sad and lonely and sings a sad travelers song hoping to commiserate with the creature.
“Home is behind
the world ahead
there are many paths to tread
through mist and shadow
to the edge of night
all shall fade
all shall fade”
when she finishes a voice by one of the doors says, “You should not be here! Everyone who comes here stays here” Jenko is able to converse with it, and founds out her name is Una a child cursed for her mothers sins to turn everyone she see’s to stone. She has lost all hope of ever being saved because she’s been here for centuries living alone. She gives them permission to stay the night and return with help for those petrified but rebuffs all advances of friendship. “when you do return, hang a white banner in the court yard, and I’ll know to stay in the north wing out of your way,” Una says.
So the group, not knowing how to save the petrified now, returns by the way they came, informing the Black tower watch they found the lost patrol.
Chirrut continues on to the Artificers tower and gives a report of the quality of the night vision goggles. And hearing the medusas situation suggests visiting the Druid circle to the east for help with the petrified.
